San Martino

The church of San Martino is near the Logge del Papa. It was constructed by Giovan Battista Pelori in 1537 while its imposing mannerist façade was designed in 1613 by Giovanni Fontana, the architect from Ticino in the north of Italy but whose main work is in Rome.

Inside, the single-aisle nave takes the shape of a Latin cross.
In addition to the baroque frescoes in the dome painted by Annibale Mazzuoli, there is a Crucifixion by the 17th century painter Guido Reni from Bologna, which you can see on the second altar of the right-hand wall.
On the third altar, there is St Bartholomew's Martyrdom painted by one of the founders of the 17th century Emilian school of painting, Gianfranco Barbieri, known as il Guercino.
In front of this picture, there are five noteworthy 15th century wooden statues by Jacopo della Quercia and his school.
On the third altar of the left-hand wall, there is a beautiful 16th century Nativity by Beccafumi.
Going now along Via Pantaneto, cross Via San Girolamo and then Via dei Servi and you come to the lovely tranquil tree-lined piazza onto which Santa Maria dei Servi faces.
