A good example of medieval fortification, Porta Romana is made up of both the gateway itself and a preceding defensive gateway.
The two structures are crowned with crenellated battlements projecting onto supporting consoles.
On the external faįade there is a fresco depicting the Coronation of the Blessed Virgin. This work was begun in 1417 by Taddeo di Bartoli, continued by Stefano di Giovanni, more commonly known as il Sassetta, in 1447 and then after his death finished by Sano di Pietro in 1459. Unfortunately, it was almost all completely destroyed by the bombs that were dropped on Sienna in 1944.
Anyone who is interested in military architecture should also visit Porta Pėspini.
Go again into Via Roma and then, by the Ponte di Romana, take Via dei Pėspini.
