Fonte Gaia

On the high side of the Campo, opposite the Palazzo Pubblico, you can see the Fonte Gaia.

This public drinking fountain was splendidly decorated in marble between 1409 and 1419 by the great sculptor Iacopo della Quercia, master of the International-Gothic style. He wanted to create a monument worthy of this piazza while simultaneously celebrating the wealth possessed by the Republic of Sienna.
Because the images had badly deteriorated over the centuries, the fountain was completely remade in 1868 by the neo-Renaissance sculptor Tito Sarrocchi. He was fairly free in his interpretation and did not work to the original design.
