San Domenico

The church of San Domenico is a grandiose Gothic building started in 1226, developed and enlarged in the 14th century and completed in 1465.

The spacious interior is spare but majestic and contains the Chapel of Santa Caterina da Sienna where the saint's skull is venerated. The Chapel was built in 1488 and covered in frescoes in the early 16th century, above all by Sodoma. Among his paintings, you will see his depiction of St Catherine's swooning.
In the Chapel of the Volte, there is a fresco going back to the end of the 14th century, the work of Andrea di Vanni, which is the only portrait of Santa Caterina da Sienna painted in her lifetime.
On the high altar the canopy with its two angels is a very fine Renaissance work from 1475 by the Florentine sculptor Benedetto da Maiano.
In the right transept you should visit the second chapel which is known as the Capella dei Tedeschi, the Chapel of the Germans, named after the tombs and inscriptions of German students who attended the University of Sienna in the 16th and 17th centuries.
