Fonte Branda was one of the city's principal sources of water in the Middle Ages and it is located very close to the small rise on which the basilica of San Domenico is built.
This fountain looks like a small fortress, with its crenellations and three powerful pointed arches. It was built in 1246 and designed by Giovanni di Stefano.
A noteworthy fact: the reference in the inscription to a passage from Dante's Inferno does not in fact refer to this Fonte Branda, but to another fountain of the same name located near the castle of Romena in the Casentino, Province of Arezzo.
After this fountain, go along Vicolo del Tiratoio and you will reach the Shrine of the House of Santa Caterina.
