Santa Maria del Carmine is a 14th century building remodelled in the early 16th century.
The façade with its overhanging eaves is extremely simple, as is the interior.
On the second altar of the right-hand wall there is a splendid painting by Domenico Beccafumi of the Archangel Michael casting out the rebellious angels.
Beccafumi painted two versions of this theme. The first, which is now in the Pinacoteca Nazionale, was not acceptable to the Carmelite fathers as it featured many nude figures, a bit like Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel. Because his nudes were considered scandalous, Beccafumi therefore painted another work, the one which you can see here, where there are no indecorous figures. He was still able to maintain the same great force of expression and strong color contrasts which he had learned from contemporary German painters.
